Tanking Rotations
Paraphrased from an article on | WoW Insider:
Single Target
This is for a boss or fully CC'd group when you have time, and no trigger happy party members:
- Bloodrage as you pull.
- Shield Block as you reach mob
- Follow with Revenge
- Build 5 Sunders with Devastate or Sunder Armor
This is for a single target when you do NOT have time to gather threat off the bat:
- Take initial hit from the mob to help with rage generation.
- Use Devastate (or Sunder Armor). Spam this until you have 5 sunders.
After 5 sunders (for either above situation):
- Shield Slam. If you have it, apply when possible.
- Shield Block when possible to help set up for
- Revenge
- Thunderclap and/or Demo. Shout so your healers won't have to heal as much (i.e. possibly steal your aggro) Note: Be careful that you don't use Thunderclap in the middle of the CC.
- Only once you are swimming in a constantly full rage bar and have done all of the above should you start using Heroic Strike.
- Use Spell Reflect on mobs when it makes sense to do so, but don't let it detract from your initial aggro gain. Only use on mobs with significant casting damage.
Continue on with this rotation until the mob is toast.
Multiple Target
Though warriors are the weakest tanking class for multi-mob tanking, it can be done. Directly from the WoW Insider article:
"The easiest way a warrior has to tank multiple mobs is called tab-targeting. Basically, you gather the mobs you'll be tanking up around yourself as best you can, and then use your sunder or devastate on each of them in turn, hitting the tab key to change targets until you've gotten them all."
If you're not so good with tab targeting, or don't trust yourself to do so, the article suggests a "mouseover sunder" macro, which can also be used to generate threat from CC'd mobs, since Sunder Armor does no damage.
/cast [target=mouseover, exists, harm] Suner Armor; Sunder Armor
The Devastate/Sunder macro is recommended for those who have it (Note: Delete the line break if you use this macro).
/cast [modifier:ctrl,harm,nodead]Sunder
Armor;[target=mouseover,harm,nodead]Sunder Armor;Devastate
Apply Thunderclap and Demo. Shout if there's no CC to worry about, but those won't help you hold aggro. Generally, you have to make sure your group members aren't doing DPS on targets they're not supposed to, because that's the fastest way to failure.
