A Brief History
In 1998 during the advent of multiplayer internet gaming, while games like ID Software’s Quake & Quake II were fast gaining popularity, players were forming into groups and referring to themselves as clans. XENO was one such group. At the time a relatively unknown group of 5 players concentrated the skills they picked up playing Quake I and proceeded to master Quake II for competitive play.
Even as early as 1998 LAN tournaments were already being held throughout North America, many boasting sponsors and prizes from the leading game hardware technology manufacturers. Soon after the tournament debut, XENO began to grow in strength and numbers attracting the top talents in the game. By 1999, the team expanded to include a European division and was dominating not only Quake II but several other games in the same genre including Unreal and Tribes.
2000 saw the maturation of Quake with Quake III Arena and also welcomed Epic Game’s Unreal Tournament (UT) into the competitive circuit. XENO clan expanded to include its first non-Quake division for UT. LAN tournaments had grown and attracted the attention of a larger audience, prize purses were no longer a single graphics card or joystick but cash totalling up to $300,000US per tournament. Professional PC gaming was born and XENO was ready. XENO remained at the forefront of tournament gaming throughout 2000 garnering the attention of media and a loyal following within the community.
In 2001 XENO remains strong and has established their longevity by pushing beyond Quake and UT to conquer new titles. Along with the legendary Q3, and UT divisions, XENO proudly boasts an undefeated Counter Strike team and has opened its Tribes 2 training camp. Firmly established, the team looks forward to the great many opportunities and events which await in the future of online gaming.
